LITTLE Haven Palliative Care’s Sue Manton has won the Regional Service category at the Queensland Regional Achievement and Community Awards held at the Leichhardt Hotel, Rockhampton on Saturday night.
The awards recognise groups, business and communities who play a vital role in enhancing the social or economic sustainability in areas such as environment and Landcare initiatives, business, tourism and community projects throughout regional and rural Queensland.
Award sponsor Clark Rubber said Ms Manton was a dedicated and committed member of her community, and a worthy award recipient and paid tribute to her passion in providing guidance and support to others in need.
Ms Manton said it was very exciting to receive the honour, but added the award belonged to every nurse, volunteer and community member who supported the work of the organisation.
“Everyone who contributes – even if it’s just for an hour – helps keep us going and helps us continue the wonderful work that Little Haven does,” she said.
Originally a member of the management committee and more recently working as business manager, Ms Manton has been involved with Little Haven for the past decade.
Her responsibilities as business manager includes directing the daily operations of the organisation, from palliative care to counselling, education and bereavement support and overseeing 12 part time nurses and 200 volunteers, along with significant and essential fundraising efforts.
With an enormous amount of support from the local community Ms Manton manages to find the operating funds needed to provide 24 hours, 7 day a week in-home nursing free of charge to anyone who needs palliative care.
Ms Manton received a handcrafted glass trophy and a $2500 cheque thanks to the Commonwealth Bank – a handy boost to Little Haven’s fundraising coffers.
